| Mandrax Lab in Soweto |
Gauteng police say a clandestine drug laboratory uncovered in Meadowlands, Soweto, was a family operation. Four suspects, all South Africans and all related to one another, were arrested on Friday, 16 October 2026, EWN reported. They are alleged to have been producing mandrax.
The bust is the latest in a string of lab discoveries across the country in recent months.
Key facts
- Four suspects were arrested on Friday, 16 October, when police uncovered the lab in Meadowlands, Soweto.
- All four are South African and are related to one another.
- The lab was allegedly behind a family home, where the suspects live.
- They are alleged to have been producing mandrax. The allegations are unproven.
What happened
Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said the suspects all stay in the same house. She explained that the lab was behind the main house, in a small separate structure and an open space where the alleged manufacturing took place. Describing the property, she said: "It is a family house."
Police have not yet said what quantity of drugs or equipment was seized, what the haul is worth, or when the suspects will appear in court. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Background: a growing number of labs
EWN notes that several similar drug labs have been uncovered across the country in recent months. Earlier this month, the outlet also reported on a multi-million-rand mandrax lab uncovered near Hartbeespoort in North West. Mandrax is an illegal sedative that has been a long-standing problem in South African communities, and police regularly dismantle labs of this kind.
Labs set up inside ordinary homes are harder to spot than large industrial sites. That is why police often rely on tip-offs from neighbours.
What this means for you
Know the warning signs. Strong chemical smells, unusual fumes, heavy deliveries of containers, windows covered at all hours or a lot of unexplained traffic can all point to illegal activity. Illegal labs use hazardous chemicals, which pose fire and health risks to the people living nearby.
